Stitch Chart Studio is built so that there is as little to collect as possible.

Your charts never leave your computer

The editor is a static web page. Every chart you draw is rendered, saved and exported by code running in your own browser — there is no server that receives your work, because there is no server involved in drawing at all. Specifically:

Share links

The editor can pack a whole chart into a link so you can send it to a friend or a tech editor. The chart is compressed into the part of the URL that follows the # — the fragment, which browsers by design never send to a web server. Creating a share link uploads nothing, and opening one downloads nothing: the chart is read out of the link itself by code running in the recipient's browser. There is no database of shared charts here, and we cannot see or retrieve one.

The flip side is worth being plain about: a link contains the chart, so anyone who has the link has the chart. It travels wherever you paste it. If a chart is confidential, send the .chart.json file instead.

What we do collect

Privacy-friendly, cookie-free analytics — page views and referrers only — so we can see which pages people find useful. No cross-site tracking, no advertising identifiers, no profile of you.

We also count a short list of product moments: a Pro window opening, an export finishing, a share link being copied, a chart running past the free stitch limit. That is how the free and paid line gets decided on facts instead of guesses. Each count carries the name of what happened and at most a couple of plain values, such as the export format or the stitch count — never a chart, a title, a stitch pattern, a link or an email address. The rule that enforces it is in the source, in src/eventguard.js, and it runs twice: once in your browser and again on our side, where nothing can talk it out of it.

To tell one visitor's five clicks apart from five visitors' one click each, a random id is generated in your browser and kept in its local storage. It is not a cookie, it is not derived from anything about you, and clearing site data throws it away for good. These counts are held by Amplitude under their privacy policy. We do not send them your IP address.

If you join the symbol key email list

Beside the free printable symbol key on the symbol key page there is an optional form for one thing: getting the updated sheet when new symbols are added. The printable itself is free and needs no email, and it will stay that way. Nothing on this site is behind that form.

If you do sign up, we store your email address and nothing else: no name, no location, and nothing at all about the charts you draw. The list is held and sent by EmailOctopus under their privacy policy. We use it for exactly one thing, which is sending you the reissued symbol key, and every email carries an unsubscribe link that takes you off the list straight away. You can also ask us to delete your record and we will.

If you buy a Pro license

Purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy, our merchant of record, under their privacy policy. They process your payment and send you a license key; we receive your email address and license key so we can support you and honor refunds, and nothing else. We never see your card details.

When you activate a license in the editor, the key is checked against Lemon Squeezy's license server and then remembered in your own browser's storage. That check sends the key — not your charts.

Children

This is a tool for making crochet charts and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
